Monique Jones is a freelance writer and best-selling author that has made a name for herself by reviewing all things Pop Culture in relation to diversity in media. In her newly released book entitled The Book of Awesome Black Americans, Jones’s African American pride is shown through all eight chapters as she acknowledges accomplished people of her ethnicity. She makes a point to highlight black Americans that have propelled past the boundaries in areas of creativity and thought such as STEM, environmentalism, and liberal arts, which are not typically seen as spaces for black people. This coincides with her theme of addressing representation in media. Jones understands the harmful psychological ties audiences can make between existing stereotypes and poor portrayals of minority characters on screen. She uses her wit and analytical skills as a type of social justice superpower to critique these representations. One could look up many of her articles from a multitude of publications such as Huffington Post, SYFY, Entertainment Weekly, etc. and find that she consistently and boldly analyzes film and television. In each publication, she always takes the dignity of people of color into account. As founder and editor-in–chief of JUST ADD COLOR at Colorwebmag.com, Jones continues to use her platform to offer unique takes on media in articles written by her and several other writers. The website persists with the mission of “affirming [oneself] through entertainment” – something that Monique Jones has done triumphantly throughout her career.
