"Reading Frankenstein Through the Lens of Monster Theory"

Presenter: Sarah Creel

Jeffrey Cohen's seminal article, "Monster Theory: Seven Theses" is an incredibly helpful tool for reading not only literature, but also the world around us. Offering seven ways that monsters and monstrosity help us understand how monsters are a reflection of our own psychological and cultural misunderstandings and fears, Cohen sheds light on the reasons why monsters have permeated our cultural imagination. This short lecture will apply Cohen's "Monster Theory" to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in order to help us understand how Frankenstein's monster functions not only within Romantic-era England, but also the present day.

Up in the Air: Contortion and Aerial Demonstrations

Performed by: Kelsey Nicole, Therachlyn, Ashley Kitchens, and Roxy Road

For many, flying high in the air or hanging upside down are very (un)natural feats. Aerialists, however, often find natural comfort high above the ground. In the following video selection, amateur and professional aerialists perform routines to popular tunes.

YouTube: The Future of Horror

Presenter: Jacob Melvin

From amateur horror shorts that are later adapted into Hollywood blockbusters to other DIY projects so realistic they inspire FBI investigations, YouTube has become the Wild West of Auteur filmmaking. Because of the relative anonymity and/or all-welcoming user platform it provides, YouTube not only attracts horror filmmakers but horrible people as well. At times, it may be hard to differentiate the difference between the two, which makes YouTube the place where the most disturbing yet interesting filmmaking now occurs.
